Under the heading of the best laid plans… September flew by before I knew it and I missed my chance to post anything to my blog. It was a month of many events, including celebrating 15 years at Right Management. If you've looked at my Career Timeline on this website, you may have noticed that I've had lots of jobs at lots of companies. They were all full of surprises, variety and challenges: just the way I like it. No one is more surprised than I am at how this anniversary came to be. I must say the path to this milestone has been an adventure. In fact, my entire career has been full of adventure.

There is an often-used expression that there are two kinds of people, and this phrase is then followed by some profound observation that makes a point specific to the situation… so no surprise that in this situation my chosen example is related to business and careers. There are two kinds of people: those who are good at starting things and those who are good at maintaining things. Some people are good at both, but their interest and gratification typically focus on one of the two pursuits. If I have to choose between starting or maintaining, starting gets my vote.

Having ideas and seeing (some of) those ideas turn into reality, and helping develop a spark in others so they can experience the enormous gratification of seeing something they envisioned become a reality are wondrous events to behold. Whether the outcomes are tangible, such as being involved in bringing a new-to-the-world product to the market, or more intangible, such as creating an environment that fosters growth and gratification, both can be enormously motivating.

In my 15 years at Right Management, I have had the chance to do a lot of 'starting things', keeping my work interesting and fruitful. It’s been quite a ride. I wonder what the next 15 years will hold.
